WMY Surf Contest
The Whitney Marie Young Memorial Surf Contest is a cause near and dear to the hearts of those of us who created this event in 2007. We started small and we grew each year and we are proud of our success. Unfortunately, this year our circumstances have changed: Gil is working at a camp in PA and is gone the entire summer. Brooke (Gil’s sister) and Bobbette (Gil’s mom) covered for Gil last summer and did the bulk of the organizing but the workload is overwhelming and they don’t have the same “connections” to the surf world as Gil does. However, as Whitney’s dear friends, we still wanted to honor her memory and we still wanted to support the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation. So, in 2010, we hosted the 1st PHANTOM Whitney Marie Young Memorial Surf Contest. We sent letters to past sponsors, auction donors and surfers and asked them to donate to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation. To our delight, friends and supporters donated nearly $3500 for the Foundation.
August 22nd was the date for the 3rd Annual Whitney Marie Young Memorial Surf Contest held at Torrance Beach. Brooke and Gil Hamilton, along with their mom, Bobbette, and their friend Kris Russell once again organized a fabulous surf contest. Unfortunately the surf did not cooperate, to say the least, but somehow the talented surfers miraculously created great rides out of less than favorable conditions. Sponsorship money increased this year, the auction was bigger and better, and there was another great after-party at Mickie Finz in Redondo Beach, thanks to the Hennessey family and Lisa Mantis. The increased support yielded phenomenal results and over $10,000 was donated to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation.
The 2nd annual Whitney Marie Young Memorial Surf Contest was held on August 23rd at Torrance Beach. We marshaled the troops and once again –Gil Hamilton, Brooke Hamilton, Caitlin Maltese and Madison Fender, along with mom Bobbette Hamilton — organized a fabulous event. All proceeds were donated to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation. This year, we expanded the event to include more sponsors, more surfers, a silent auction and an after-party at Mickie Finz in Redondo Beach, coordinated by friends Shannon Hennessey, Michel Astiazaran and Lisa Mantis. The expanded effort yielded phenomenal results and over $8000 was donated to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation.
On August 10th —Whitney’s 20th birthday—the 1st annual Whitney Marie Young Memorial Surf Contest was held at Torrance Beach. It was the perfect beach-day and the sand was crowded with over seventy-five people, including thirty-seven surfers, all there to honor Whitney’s life.
Overall, the event was a huge success. Many families prepared food and joined in the festivities; Whitney’s brother Jonathan took amazing pictures; Whitney’s sister Logan surfed in the contest; and fortunately, Marlene and Steve were there to witness the excitement. And none of it would have been possible without the support of many, such as: REMAX, Stickblade, SDSU Dance Team, Ezekiel, PV Surf, Surf/Ride, and Victory. On top of that there were two surfboards donated by Rebel boards at CHP and Angelo Ferrara; numerous items from Quicksilver; skateboard decks from ET Surf; and stickers, wallets, shorts, and tee-shirts from Dragon. In the end, we were able to donate over $2,800 to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation.
