Annual Report to Our Donors

Life goes on…one cannot deny that axiom. Whitney’s friends are getting married and having babies. I learned recently that one close friend will become a DAD on Nov. 16th —the day Whitney died. How wonderful that a sweet little baby will bring joy to the world and warm feelings to that date!

We have exciting news to share! First, our donors generously donated $115,442 in 2017 and so far in 2018, we have received $78,000, which means our total income for twelve years broke the million-dollar mark—$1,0333,576!!!!! Marlene is decreasing her time at Little Company and will be devoting more attention to WYCF fund raising. Second, the WYCF website is up to date and WYCF has joined social media. Take a minute to check out our sites: https://www.facebook.com/whitneysfoundation/ and https://www.instagram.com/whitneysfoundation/. Finally, we have two new official (but unpaid) “employees”: Siena Mills will coordinate social media and Tina Quinn will administer the website and annual fund development.

Tina wanted to share a few words: “We give to WYCF because we know Marlene & Steve are committed to acting as fiduciaries for us, their donors and supporters. The research and detailed selection process they go through to determine which organizations will be the beneficiaries is very deliberate. We love that they emphasize smaller charities with specific programs where the WYCF grant can make a difference in that organization’s ability to really help children. Marlene & Steve are doing the research that we don’t have time to do ourselves. We trust them completely and love that they cover all expenses so every dollar we donate to the WYCF goes directly to a children’s charity.”

The Foundation was born out of tragedy. But as we long for Whitney in our lives, we — Steve and Marlene, Logan and Jonathan and their families—are extremely proud and grateful for what so many have helped us to accomplish in her name. We celebrate:

  • The wonderful charities we have touched…in 2007, (our first year) we gifted $18,900; in 2018, we gifted $123,200 to 27 very deserving organizations, which help us to fulfill the mission of WYCF.
  • A grand total of $990,100 gifted to deserving children’s charities since 2007
  • Special friends like… the amazing ladies of PCCH who once again met a $10K challenge grant for the Literally Healing book program at CHLA…the NCL Peninsula Chapter which carries on the Walk for Whitney with MADD… Paul Hamada who generously donates each year and arranges a company match…NCL mom Kerry Olson who encouraged her Theta alumnae chapter to direct philanthropic funds to WYCF.
  • MADD and their educational efforts which we applaud

Thanks to each of you —-for allowing us to continue to be Whitney’s parents through the Foundation

—-for making a difference every day in the lives of children and young adults.

Logan, Jonathan and their families will be joining us for a wonderful Christmas and Whitney will be with us in spirit.

With love and gratitude for being part of the WYCF journey.

2016 10th anniversary Annual Report to our Donors

2016, The 10th Anniversary Annual Recap Letter for the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation

We are profoundly impacted by the fact this is the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation. As you know, we formed the Foundation in 2006 when Whitney, our youngest child, was hit and killed while crossing the street by a hit-and-run, drunk driver. Whitney loved kids and she had a special way with them and we decided to honor her memory by supporting children’s causes. We never thought we could possibly live ten years without Whitney in our lives. We miss her so much! The Foundation was born out of tragedy, but as we remember, we are extremely proud and grateful for what has been accomplished in Whitney’s name. We reflect upon:

  • Our donors…..whose generosity in 2015 totaled $118,175.92.
  • The wonderful agencies that we have touched…in 2007, we gifted $18,900 and in 2016 we gifted a record $146,000. As you can see from the enclosed 2016 recap, we made gifts to 28 very deserving organizations. Acting as a fiduciary for our donors and supporters, the beneficiary selection process is very deliberate. Emphasis is placed on smaller charities with specific programs where the WYCF grant can make a difference in that organization’s ability to carry out their impactful programs. We always strive to fulfill the mission of the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation which is to encourage children and young adults to triumph despite life’s challenges and to dream, live, love and laugh in ways previously unimaginable.
  • Special friends like… Siena and Harrison who adopted WYCF as their Mills Family Christmas project, fell in love with the adaptive bikes and collected over $6000, which was used to buy bikes for kids at CHLA… the generous ladies of PCCH who met a $10,000 challenge grant for the Literally Healing Program at CHLA…Pam Lopez who sells candy for WYCF and conquers excel and mail merge on Marlene’s behalf…Ted Dodd who once again donated proceeds from the Dodd Brothers golf tournament to WYCF…two special friends who have named WYCF in their estate plan…the NCL Peninsula Chapter which carries on the Walk for Whitney with MADD… Sunshine Kids Foundation naming Marlene as Honorary Chair of their annual bowl-a-thon…and Michele Underwood who regularly makes gifts to WYCF for all her honor memorials.
  • MADD and their educational efforts which we embrace….this year Marlene spoke to Las Simpaticas about MADD and as a couple, we spoke to several Los Hermanos groups about the dangers of drinking and driving.
  • Our new and improved website—check it out when you have a moment: whitneysfoundation.org

Since 2007, WYCF has gifted over $723,850 to deserving children’s charities. We personally pay all administrative and operating expenses. Consequently –it is still true that every dollar donated to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation is gifted to carefully selected children’s charities and, of course, your gift is tax deductible.

The pain of losing Whitney never ends but we are honored to be able to keep Whitney’s love of children and her incredible spirit alive through her foundation. Thanks to each of you — donations make a difference every day in the lives of children and young adults. Happy Thanksgiving! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!

2015 Annual Report Letter for the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation

2015 Annual Report Letter for the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation

To All Prospective Donors

The Whitney Young Children’s Foundation was founded in 2006, when our youngest child was hit and killed by a hit-and-run, drunk driver. Whitney loved kids and she had a special way with them and we decided to honor her memory by supporting children’s causes.

This Foundation was born out of tragedy, but has given us much for which to be grateful:

  • For our donors…..whose generosity in 2015 totaled $117,425!
  • For the wonderful agencies that we have touched… in 2007, we gifted $18,900 and in 2015 we gifted a record $130,305. As you can see from the enclosed 2015 recap, we made gifts to 27 very deserving organizations. Acting as a fiduciary for our donors and supporters, the beneficiary selection process is very deliberate. Emphasis is placed on smaller charities or is restricted to specific programs where the WYCF grant can make a difference in that organization’s ability to carry out their impactful programs. We always strive to fulfill the mission of the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation which is to encourage children and young adults to triumph despite life’s challenges and to dream, live, love and laugh in ways previously unimaginable. We have added several new organizations –our personal favorite is a charity which provides adaptive bikes to special needs children so that they can ride with their friends, grow in strength, and most importantly in confidence as they are included in “normal” activities.
  • For special friends…. like Siena, Marley and Harrison who adopted WYCF as their Mills Family Christmas project, collected over $4000 for WYCF and then purchased hundreds of new books for the Literally Healing Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles…and Ted Dodd who repeatedly donates proceeds from his Dodd Bro Golf Tournament to WYCF…and Pam Lopez who sells candy for WYCF and conquers excel and mail merge on Marlene’s behalf… and Crisell & Associates who graciously underwrite tax preparations each year for WYCF…and NCL Peninsula Chapter which carried on the Walk for Whitney with MADD even after we retired and NCL Class of 2015 which honored Whitney at their Medallion…and donors like Paul Hamada whose company matches his generosity and doubles his donation…and Kitsa Treantafelles who graciously provides clerical assistance.
  • For MADD and their educational efforts which we embrace….We are always happy to talk to groups of young people about the dangers of drinking and driving so keep us in mind. Through the MADD walks, we raised over $55,000 for their education efforts.

Our hearts go out to the parents of Katerina—the young woman who received Whitney’s liver in 2006—who passed away in November. They were so grateful for the nine extra years with their daughter that they named WYCF as a means to honor Katerina’s memory.

Since 2007 WYCF has gifted over $581,050 to deserving children’s charities. We personally pay all administrative and operating expenses. Consequently –it is still true that every dollar donated to the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation is gifted to children’s charities and, of course, your gift is tax deductible.

People tell us …time heals…but the pain of losing a child never ends; however, you do learn to live life and embrace life with a broken heart and you do experience joy in your life. We are honored to be able to keep Whitney’s love of children and her incredible spirit alive through her foundation. We are amazed to see how these donations make a difference every day in the lives of children and young adults.

With love,

Marlene Young, President
Steve Young, Secretary

What Can You Do?

2012 New Year’s Resolutions

It may be a new year, but the fight against drunk driving is still as
imperative as ever. So now, at this time of the year, a
time of new beginnings, we are recommitting ourselves to making
an impact in the fight against drunk driving and saving lives in 2012.

This year, we resolve to:

  • Serve 65,000 victims of drunk and drugged driving, as well as
recruit additional volunteer victim advocates across the country
to serve even more victims. You can help becoming a MADD
victim advocate or by spreading the word about MADD Victim
    Services.
    Volunteer Here.
  • Continue introducing new legislation to states that currently do
not require convicted drunk drivers to use ignition interlock
devices, and introduce legislation creating enhanced penalties
for adults who drive drunk with children in the
car. Join us by going to the policy action site
to email your legislators to take action.
    Take Action Here.
  • Equip more parents with the tools they need to talk with their
teens about alcohol and expand our parent outreach, through
schools during PowerTalk21® and Red Ribbon Week, to more
than 65,000 parents. Download our free parent
handbook here and share it with other parents you know that may want
to start the conversation with their kids about alcohol.
  • Walk Like MADD® with more than 20,000 walkers and raise at
least 2.5 million dollars at events across the country.
Get involved and make a difference by registering for a Walk in
    your community here.
